design process nov24 - chris james 37.jpg

A weaver, formally trained in woven textiles at the Royal College of Art, engaging in a practice that is a meditation on both process and material, where the slow, methodical journey is as significant as the final piece. Each thread that is touched is a reminder of the tactile relationship between hand, material, and time, and great care is taken in documenting this intimate process. Materials hold a sacred place in the practice, weaving with sumptuous, natural fibres, honouring their inherent beauty. Entrenched in the work is a preoccupation with contrasts, the rich interplay between.  Referencing the functionality of traditional interior textiles; be it eiderdown duvets or Austian balloon blinds, the pieces playfully utilise structure to imbue the long and rich history of the medium into each cloth.  An exploration that allows a challenge of convention as the work floats dreamily across the boundaries of function, art and craft. With inspirations and ethos rooted deeply in an admiration for the natural world, the intention is to tread lightly and make thoughtful choices about environmental impact at each step of the creative journey.
